Abstract:

Journal of a cruise in the U.S. Ship Vincennes. Kept by John Lawrence Fox, a surgeon, on board the ship Vincennes, during the United States Exploring Expedition of 1838-1842, under the command of Charles Wilkes, in the South Pacific. Fox describes native customs, diseases encountered, geology, natural history, missionary work among the Pacific islanders, and Hawaiian agriculture. Also details customs of the Californios, and the California and Oregon coast trade, with a description of the village of Yerba Buena, later to become San Francisco.
Journal of travels from January 1852 to January 1861. Kept by John Lawrence Fox on the ship San Jacinto in the Atlantic, Baltic, and Caribbean in 1854-1856, and on the ship Mississippi in the Pacific from 1857 to 1861, with details of visits to Manila, China, and Japan. Accompanied by a chronology of Fox's navy career, written in ms. in the 1880s on a folded sheet of U.S. Navy Dept. stationary.
